Unveiling the Power of Organization: A Review of Plottr for Authors
In the dynamic world of writing, where creativity intertwines with structure, authors often seek tools that seamlessly blend the two. One such gem in the realm of writing software is Plottr. As an author of middle-grade books with a penchant for spooky classics, I recently delved into this tool, and today, I’m excited to share my insights in this review of Plottr. This is the fourth installment in the PurdyBooks series of Writing Tools for Middle Grade Authors. These are unsolicited and uncompensated reviews of my favorite tools for prewriting, writing and editing/revising my own middle grade fiction.
5 Reasons Why I Love Using Plottr
User-Friendly Interface: Plottr boasts a user-friendly interface that caters to both seasoned authors and those just starting their literary journey. Its intuitive design allows for easy navigation, ensuring that writers can focus on the creative process without grappling with a steep learning curve.
Plot Organization Made Effortless: For an author crafting a series of books for teens and tweens, maintaining consistency and coherence across multiple volumes is paramount. Plottr rises to the occasion by offering a robust organizational structure. The tool enables you to outline plot points, character arcs, and settings effortlessly, providing a comprehensive overview of your narrative landscape.
Agent Submission Assistance: For authors seeking representation, the journey begins with compelling agent submissions. Plottr aids in this crucial step by helping you craft well-organized and engaging synopses. Its features streamline the process of condensing your narrative into a concise yet captivating description, a valuable asset when vying for the attention of literary agents.
Crafting Irresistible Book Descriptions: Capturing the essence of your middle-grade fiction and non-fiction is vital for attracting readers and catching the eye of book publishers. Plottr excels in assisting authors in crafting irresistible book descriptions. By visualizing your plot structure, you can fine-tune your marketing approach, ensuring that your books stand out in a crowded market.
Attracting Agents & Publishers: If your goal is to make your publications appealing to both publishers and agents, Plottr aligns seamlessly with this objective. The tool’s emphasis on clarity and organization aligns with the preferences of most professionals in the publishing industry. Plottr allows writers to create stories that not only entertain but also resonate with the stringent standards of agents and publishers.
My experience with Plottr has been nothing short of enlightening. For authors navigating the intricate dance between creativity and structure, this tool proves to be a valuable companion. Whether you’re a seasoned writer or a budding wordsmith, Plottr’s versatility, ease of use, and focus on organization make it a standout choice in the realm of writing software.
So, if you find yourself on the quest for a tool that enhances your storytelling process and elevates your submissions to agents and book publishers, look no further than Plottr—a writer’s ally in the pursuit of literary excellence.
Update: After running into a few problems with Plottr, I wanted to add the following caveats:
- Be sure to save your work OFTEN when working with Plottr. It does not have an auto-save feature like other writing programs such as Scrivener.
- I have recently run into bugs while using the Timeline function in Plottr. Although the Plottr team is very good at responding to questions and suggestions, I lost quite a bit of my work, on more than one occasion. (Did I mention the need to save your work?) I notified the Plottr folks about this, and they got right back to me. They are good about updating their software whenever they find a glitch, so I’m hopeful they’ll get this issue resolved soon.
- I’m loving the character building feature in Plottr including the ease of describing book characters, categorizing them and even adding an image to help visualize and describe them during the drafting process.
